“The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud.” – Coco Chanel
This quote reminds us that speaking out about mental health, especially in minority communities, is a powerful step toward healing and empowerment.
This July, as we recognize Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, we shine a light on the unique challenges faced by minority communities in accessing mental health care. Cultural stigma, systemic barriers, and lack of representation often leave these groups underserved. At Acumen Mindset, we’re committed to breaking these barriers and fostering a supportive environment where everyone’s mental health is prioritized.
Did you know?
• BIPOC Communities: Only 31% of Black adults and 22% of Asian adults with mental illness received mental health services in 2015, compared to 48% of White adults (SAMHSA, 2015).
• Hispanic/Latino Communities: Over 60% of Hispanic and Latino Americans with mental illness receive no treatment in a year (NAMI, 2023).
• AAPI Communities: Asian Americans were 60% less likely to receive mental health treatment than non-Hispanic Whites in 2018 (SAMHSA, 2018).
• Black Youth: Only 1 in 3 Black adults seeking mental health care receive it, and only 3.4% of U.S. psychologists are Black (APA, 2020).
These statistics highlight the urgent need for culturally responsive care and greater awareness.
